Happiness

In this blog, I will share with you positive thoughts, knowledge, opinions and experience, plus inspirational songs, simply because I wish encourage and inspire you, and to spread positivity.

Life is not perfect like it is portrayed in films and on TV adverts and programmes, we all experience stress, worries and mixed feelings. For the second edition of my blog series, I’ve noted some adjustments that we can make to our lives right now to encourage happiness, as we make changes for the better, and focus on the positives.

Happy and grateful to be able to do a job that I love

Appreciate and be grateful for the little things instead of focusing on perfection

A large part of daily happiness can be achieved simply by appreciating the small things, those little things that are often taken for granted and that we would miss if they were taken away. I recently went a week without being able to use my kitchen sink. I quickly realised how grateful I was for the kitchen sink when I had to do all of my washing up in the bathroom!

If we only allow ourselves to be happy when accomplishing a big goal or when everything lines up perfectly, then we are making life harder than it needs to be. Our attention and focus needs to be shifted to the little things, that deep down we are truly grateful for, but we may not show gratitude or appreciation for them every day.

To bring more positivity and happiness into our lives, here are a few things that we should be grateful for, everyday:

  • The basic necessities of life, food, clothing & shelter - They are such a blessing, imagine what life would be like without them.

  • Our family and friends - for being our closest kin in the world and for being our companions in life.

  • Our health and wellbeing - good health is the ultimate wealth. Even if your health is not 100%, we can be thankful for the parts that are working well. For example, you are reading this blog, so you have the gift of eyesight.

  • That we woke up this morning - today is a new day. It’s another opportunity to start again, it is another chance to get it right.

  • And as a bonus I would like that add that you should be grateful for YOU. For being who you are and for touching the world with your presence.

Stop comparing yourself to everyone else

One of the reasons why we can feel unhappy and down about ourselves and end up struggling with insecurity, is because we compare our private life with everyone else’s public highlight showreel. It can be really hard to not do this, especially when life isn’t going so well. We consume so much of other peoples “perfect” life every day though TV, Social Media, magazines and blogs, that when we compare their life to our own, and we think about our struggles and issues, we feel terrible.

To bring more positivity and happiness into out lives, Here are a few reasons why we should stop comparing:

  • Comparison is the thief of joy. Comparing yourself to others only makes your life difficult as it breeds feelings of envy, low self confidence and even depression as well as compromises our ability to trust others.. Instead of comparing, try using others as motivation to work harder and do better.

  • Comparison will stall your progress. If you spend your days comparing yourself to other people’s achievements, you’ll never get anything accomplished yourself. Invest your energy into pursuing your dreams and goals. Don’t waste your precious time on others. We each get 86,400 seconds each day to live our lives so we should do just that.

  • No one has a perfect life. Although you might think that a lot of people are leading an amazing life with no down times, this just isn’t true. Every single person experiences problems and challenges throughout their lives. No one is exempt from this. Some people are just better at keeping it together, and putting on a brave face to the outside world.

Unfortunately, there will always be someone better than you at something in life. All can do is work hard and try your best. Whatever is meant to be for you will fall into place at the right time.

Focus on you strengths

No one is perfect, and deep down, we all know this, but on a emotional level, we seem to feel bad if we don’t reach perfection. To focus on your weaknesses may set you on a downward spiral as you may feel unhappy as your turn your focus off of you and in to the wrong direction, and it may cause you to have low self esteem. Instead of focusing on what you see as your weaknesses, try thinking about and focusing on your strengths. Celebrate them, be proud of them, feel good about them and work on using them to your best advantage. One of the best ways to improve your self-esteem is to treat yourself as you would treat a valued friend, in a positive but honest way. Try not to critizize yourself and try not to kick yourself when you are down. Remind youself of your real worth, start believing in you and start believing in the value of your uniqueness.
